Pit Strategy and Patience Put Wright in the
Winner's Circle
(June 15, 2009) Hardly
a long-shot,
Marcus Wright jockeyed the #22
Green River Water District Chevrolet to
victory
Monday Night at the
Kentucky Speedway in
Sparta, Kentucky in the
31E Band
Grand National Series. Much
like the winning jockey atop Mine That Bird
at the
Kentucky Derby,
Calvin Borel, Wright waited patiently as
the others lead the way and then he timely
gambled his way into the record books. Wright
and Pole Sitter, Jon Judd, pitted earlier than
the rest of the field and prayed that the race
would remain caution free. The yellow flag
never came out, putting
Judd in 1st and Wright a close 2nd.
"Down the Stretch, They Come," and on lap 52 of
the 54 lap race, the # 22 Chevy made its move to
the inside going into turn 1 and never looked
back, leading the final 3 laps and firmly
placing the garland of roses across the hood of
the # 22 machine. Finishing out the top five
were Judd, Phillip Jeffries,
Jeff Purvis
and Brian Powers.
As mentioned earlier, Jon
Judd was the Pole Sitter with a very fast 30.665
second lap, earning him the
Fox Hollow Pole Award.
Our winner, Marcus Wright, picked up this week's
SKFSA Hard Charger
Award, improving 7 spots from his 8th
place qualifying effort. Jamie Anderson and
Anthony Ford share Monday Night's Glasgow
Primary Care Headache Award by
dropping 5 positions from their respective
qualifying spots. Last, but not least, Jon Judd
picked up the Bulle
Buildings Lap Leader Trophy, leading
36 of the 54 lap ran at the Kentucky Speedway.
